As hard as it may ever be to tear me away from my blooming little girl, I’m always pleased and refreshed to find myself in such happy, distracting, entirely adult company. Christina and Elliot are getting married at, well probably my favorite venue in Calistoga, and they were kind enough to invite me into their world for a day on the most beautiful day I’ve ever experienced in the most beautiful city I know.

It was such a pleasure to spend a nice, leisurely day with Rachel and Christjan in their beautiful town of Mar Vista, and in their gorgeous home, that admittedly, I was drooling over. How grateful I am that I live and work in a place where November looks like this! We lunched, we drank, we shared stories, and it was exactly the kind of experience that makes me so keen to spend time with my clients. Thanks for such a great day!
Since having my beautiful daughter, and all that life has dished out – bad and good and sometimes great – I find myself enjoying my favorite year as a wedding photographer at a leisurely pace. I didn’t expect to be so stay at home, but I also didn’t expect that Husbone’s career would take a wildly exciting turn (more on that at a later date), and that our role reversals would mean that I would have to scale back, so our family could move forward. That being said, every single couple I have this year is my favorite client. I am photographing days that are not only memorable for these future husbands and wives, but also for myself in the forming of new friendships with awesome people.
Clint and Eleanor are awesome people. I kind of had a feeling they’d be great, as on more than one occasion my correspondence with Clint regarding business-y client-y things had me bark out loud in laughter, and that when we planned our day together, we pretty much just wanted to eat some good food. Their energy and enthusiasm for each other is contagious, and I walked away from this day truly excited for the friendship I hope we will forge. But first, I hope they love these images as much as I do.
Friends. It’s about to get weird.
When a client books me, especially a local one, I stress how meaningful it is to do an engagement session. Sometimes people are hesitant – sometimes they just don’t get why a person would have their pictures taken just because. Let’s set aside for a moment that they might be engaged (isn’t that reason enough?), and let me tell you why I insist on doing it. This is a moment in your lives, where you and your love for each other is vibrant, the future date of a wedding shelters over you like the promise that it is. I’ve been married now for almost 8 years. And now more than ever am I not the person I once was. But somehow, through all the changes, in life, in mind, in spirit, I have a handsome and strapping man who continues to love me despite the fact that I may not now be who he expected. I like to think that I’m better. But those few and rare photos of us in the spring of our love churn an understanding in me. A spark that now is often fighting for purchase around the bags under my tired mommy eyes.
I like to say, these photographs are the record of this moment in your relationship. For instance, it is rumored that Adam made Angela create an elaborate costume for a theme party he was having (and coincidentally, hired my good husband’s band to play music). The theme? Future. I have heard to it referred to as The Future Party. And so, Angela, created something of a space suit. But Adam had an entirely different kind of future in mind. And there in front of all their loved ones, not dressed in space suits, he proposed in song.
And so when I asked them to offer me a day of their lives to commemorate in photos, I happily arrived to a very prop heavy, theme rich afternoon – with of course, a story and through line. Adam is a screenwriter, after all. And hands down, this was the most I ever laughed, and the most fun I’ve ever had on an engagement shoot. I am so grateful for Adam and Angela, and for being allowed to document them in their full Adam and Angela-iness.
And duh, we still did the Punam Bean-y stuff too :).
