Kristin + Mark

Kristin and Mark and I met on a Friday evening in the city. It was a crowded night, and we were hunched together in a corner, by the window.

“Mark and I are travel dorks,” she said at one point.

ME TOO. Travel dorks. I love that. I’m such a travel dork. I’m sure you may have noticed. To say the least, we really hit it off from there. We love oysters, fine food (and just really really good food), great wine, cooking, and of course, traveling. Traveling far and wide to experience all of these things from different perspectives, in a different world than the one we live in every day.

They also at first, didn’t love the idea of an engagement session. How cheesy! They thought. I always make sure my clients know how I feel about the engagement session. It’s complimentary. It’s my chance to get to know you – for the three of us to form a bond. So I can come to your wedding day and fit myself into that bond comfortably. I’ll even travel, I noted, if it fits into my schedule.

We talked about doing it in New York City, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont. The woods, warehouses, open air art museums. Our conversation wandered to Paris, and Mark said,

“We’ve traveled all over the world together and we’ve never had any good pictures of us, because it’s always just the two of us.”

“Wouldn’t that be cool if you did the session in Paris?” I beamed!

“Oh My God. We can TOTALLY do our engagement session in PARIS!!” they cheered!

Mark was so into the idea. Kristin was afraid to believe it could be true! I was so elated by their excitement that I was hoping hoping hoping they would book me either way! How dear it is to me to have clients with such a grand sense of adventure and spontaneity!

Are you a wedding photographer? I mean, really, how awesome is our job?

And on Sunday night, before we even had a contract, they booked me a ticket to Paris. How awesome must it be to go through life with someone who has the same sense of adventure as you do?

And so, we were in Paris. we spend multiple days together, we stayed up late laughing, cooking, eating. And the whole time I’m thinking how it was as perfect as it could be. There I will be, in September in California, photographing this amazing moment in their lives, and here I am really and truly getting to know them, getting to see their love, the way they look at each other, their inside jokes. I look through these images, and I think, this it totally them. And I love that I know that.

Nadia + Alex + Vera

I don’t really get the opportunity to shoot a lot of family sessions. Usually I’m traveling when I get them – but I was really stoked that Nadia, Alex and little Vera and I could make it work! We went to the sculpture garden in Trenton, NJ (living outside the city has really opened my mind up to the Metro North and New Jersey transit :)), where Nadia and Alex were married just a few years ago. It was really special to return with their relatively new little human. Its pretty amazing to imagine what love brings.

Love the pics. You are a beautiful family! And I love how the beloved sippy cup made it in there as well!

They wanted this session as a suprise for the grandparents anniversary which I thought was really sweet. We all just adore her……Alex has been around at all our family events for quite a few years but weve really gotten to know him more this past year.

.Afterwards they served us excellent homemade Chili made from local beef and really good fresh bread. The restaurant had this old beat up piano with half the keys either missing or sticky and despite the limitations of the instrument Alex pumped out some serious licks I had no idea he was a closet Jazz pianist! Anyhow really great times!
