Courtney + Brandon

My mom is a high roller in Vegas. Her game? Video Poker. In the long run, she probably loses more than she wins, but the great perk of my mothers gambling habits is that if we tag along for a Vegas vacation with her, we get everything comped.

So when Courtney, a Las Vegas native, and her husband to be Brandon (a transplant from Seattle – one of my most favorite cities ever!!), suggested we do a Veronica Lake inspired photo shoot in an off strip hotel lobby with all the fixin’s for said photo shoot, Huz and I were super excited to turn our trip into a babymoon.

Now here is the thing about Courtney. She has this awesome blog called Quit WINEing. In it, her, and sometimes Brandon, engage in these elaborate photo shoots in order to convey wine pairings that you may not have considered. Courtney is a Sommelier, and on her blog, she’ll educate you on what wine to pair with everything from Halloween Candy to Prime Rib. Her costumes are elaborate and and often hilarious, and when she told me she wanted to get creative with our shoot, I was so stoked, because I just knew she’d do something fabulous. And at that point I never even met the woman!

We had such a fun afternoon with Courtney and Brandon, and it was our very last shoot until we become parents! Woot!

Life in California: Acido Durado, Joshua Tree

I haven’t spoken of my pregnancy much on this blog. When I first got pregnant, I knew I wanted to document everything, week by week (mostly :)), my insecurities, my hopes, and lessons learned. So I started another blog just for that purpose, called Waiting for Baboo. That way I could get real about my pregnancy, and eventually parenting, without unsuspecting brides and grooms to be having to wade through a sea of updates about stretch marks, Hypnobabies, swollen appendages, and all those other lovely effects of pregnancy. But yes. I’m very pregnant at the moment, and currently embarking upon my 38th week of child bearing.

For New Years this year, being all pregnant and stuff, My best friend Valerie and I decided to do a New Years weekend, just the two of us and our others. We rented this amazing house in Joshua Tree:

Joshua Tree, Acido Durado

For two nights. The place is called Acido Durado (Acid Gold in spanish), and it’s a beautiful wonder in the deserty hills of Joshua Tree.

This lovely miss below is my best friend. We’ve known each other since we were in high school, and she’s my sister. I’ve taken her picture once or twice, and so this time around, she took some maternity pictures of me. She did an amazing job, considering I had to give her a 5 minute film camera lesson (like, this is how you turn it on, an aperture is the hole in the lens, you control it with this knob to this effect blah blah) 30 seconds before she shot the first photo. She was a little nervous not being able to see the image on the back of the camera (film and all :)), but hey! She totally rocked it!

The rest below were taken by Val!

She even conquered 3200 at night! So proud!!

Since I was 12 weeks pregnant, my dear Husbone has taken a picture of me almost every week of my pregnancy. It’s been a valuable tool in learning how my body actually looks, as opposed to what I think it looks like. It was a lot easier being in front of the camera after having my picture taken every week for 30 weeks. These photos, both the set that Husbone took and Valerie too, are the first time anyone has photographed me where I didn’t absolutely cringe. So, good job Husbone and Valerie!!

Amy

I just love all the photos of you. Val did a fabulous job =) congrats my dear and I love reading all your posts.

You look incredible! Hang in there. It will soon be over and you’ll have a whole new adventure ahead. Best wishes!

It was like that little heart shaped gate was waiting for you and your belly to come along. Perfection. What a lovely mama to be you make!

these pictures are gorgeous and you are absolutely stunning. pregnancy is truly the most beautiful time in a womans life.

Logan

As I embark upon these last few weeks of my own pregnancy, I try to imagine the face of the little girl growing inside of me. And despite the 3d scans of her big eyes and full lips, it’s hard to translate that gold, glowing figure into a small flesh made creature. I dream about her, she looks like my baby pictures in those dreams, but I never seem to get a very good grasp of her face.

Logan decided, on his very due date, that it was time to be born RIGHT NOW. After a 3 hour labor late Halloween night, after braving downtown NYC Halloween traffic, Logan shot out like a torpedo only an hour after Carla and Charlie got to the hospital. I was pretty surprised when I got a text from Carla, November 1st, with a picture of this little man who looks like her. Logan. Such a handsome boy. And so punctual!

I feel so lucky to have not only been able to photograph this journey with Carla and Charlie and their new baby boy, but to be going through the same journey, a few steps behind, was pretty neat. To see Carla become a mother, to see Charlie become a father, when I first met them they were two people in love and now they are parents. It’s a remarkable transformation, and watching them, and photographing their son, makes me so excited for what lies ahead.

Also, side note, little Logan was awake for his whole session! We kept him calm by blowing the blow drier on him. Magic!

Maureen + Todd

Maureen and Todd are so easy to photograph. They have an easy, loving way with each other, and in the hills of Malibu with the sun setting behind us, there wasn’t much I had to direct from them as we hiked some precarious trails. We just hung out, and I took pictures. It was the perfect engagement session, the ocean beside us, the breeze blowing, and people in love. I can’t WAIT for their wedding in Napa. Sadly I won’t get to see much of them between now and then since they live in Singapore. But it was a beautiful day spent with these two, Husbone kindly providing pregnant lady hiking assistance!

Ashley + Andy

Little did I know that roughly 3 and a half years ago when I looked Andy up on Facebook, that the young woman he’d be bringing with him for our fun times shoot would be so lovely, and so obviously the one he was meant to be with. I’ve known Andy for well over a decade, I’ve known him to be a hopeless romantic, kind and loving person who cares deeply about his close friends and family. I also know that he has found his mate in Ashley, and together they hold their values, their love and their love for their families and close friends with equal fervor. I could tell even back in October of 2008 that in each other, they had found something truly precious and special. It brings me joy to see the joy that Ashley brings Andy. She’s beautiful and graceful, but she has a sense of humor and humbleness. She laughs easily and loud, and Andy being one of the funniest people I’ve known, this freely given joy cries out almost every moment they are together.

When you see them together, you feel the wonderment that has taken hold of them. It was my great honor to photograph this wedding, to have photographed this relationship as it’s grown and blossomed over the years. And it was pretty crazy to see pretty much everyone I knew in high school at their wedding. It was like the high school/summer camp reunion I never went to. Anyhoo, I love these two.
