Meet me in Asia!

Once, when I was a little girl (hiding behind my mother in the above picture that you may have seen previously on this blog), my mother took me to India. I don’t remember much, except that the insects were humongous, and the dense crowds in Delhi and Calcutta were like giant monsters I thought would eat me. I was six, and even then had a deep appreciation for riding on the back of an elephant. Other than that though, I didn’t really like India. It was a big scary place full of vast crowds of people, it was hot, and my mother made me wear silly hats on my head.

Now I’m a grown woman, and India is a place I’ve always wanted to return to. I’m a photographer now, and my sole aim, in anything I might create, is to make something beautiful and significant that tells a story about some part of the earth. Also, I happen to be Indian, and as I get older, I wonder more and more about the strange and beautiful place my family came from. And I’ve been given a great opportunity to make pictures for some in love people there this Thanksgiving, and to top it off, some more in love people in Hong Kong – whose airport I vaguely remember. That wedding is on New Years.

And so, Husbone and I are elated to embark upon the adventure that is Asia from November 23rd until January 4th. We’ve got a pretty tight schedule, but after our wedding in Kerala, which is in the south (a stones throw from the Maldives, which even an hour flight away is still WAY to expensive for us to pursue a trip there!), we will be touring around Rajasthan until December 19th, then we’ll be in Thailand for a week before we finish our trip in Hong Kong.

In total, our trip is going to be about 6 weeks. If you are considering booking us for your wedding, the best thing to do would be to let me know before November 20th, so we can at least get the ball rolling. I will have a netbook with me, so I will be able to make calls and video conference when we have internet available, so if you missed this note, no worries!

All print orders must be made by November 15th at the latest, in order to arrive by Christmas.

All albums must be finalized by November 15th at the latest, in order to arrive by Christmas (that’s if you are NOT getting a Queensberry album). My Studio Manager, the lovely Helen, will be taking care of business while I’m gone, so she’ll be making any shipments that come in after I leave.

If you don’t care much if things arrive by Christmas, we will be returning January 4th, and will process all orders at that time!

Now that that’s all out of the way, I would gratefully accept any recommendations or travel advice in the comments section or you can email me! We mostly have our India trip planned, and are mostly looking for advice about Thailand or Hong Kong!

In the meantime I hope you will contact me at  w e d d i n g s <a t> p u n a m.b e a n.c o m if any of the following apply:

A. If anyone of you: my readers, your families or friends are living or traveling in India or Thailand or Cambodia around the above dates and would like some pretty pictures!

B. Anyone getting married in these parts? We can negotiate a great rate! Send me the details!

C. Want to meet me for curry and good cheer? Let me know where we should meet!

Yay!

Hi Punam, For HK… Kowloon Hotel, Nathan’s Hotel and Eaton hotel have some decent rates and are located in convenient neighborhoods. Priceline has been know to carry these hotels at super affordable rates – depends on the inventory.

Hi Punam, for HK, I find this link quite a good one to check out the different hotels without having to go to individual hotel websites as they have pictures of the rooms etc. maybe when you’ve picked a few choices, you can visit the hotel’s official website and shop around for good deals :)

HK is basically splitted into 4 main areas – HK island, Kowloon, New Territories and the Outlying Islands. For convenience, I’d pick HK island/Kowloon. HK island – I’d recommend Causeway Bay/ Wanchai(Admiralty and Central are also good but they’re a lot more expensive). Kowloon – Tsim Sha Tsui will be a good place to stay, it’s got a lot of shops and restaurants. I live on HK island, so I have to admit that I’m abit biased :p haha. If you need more info on anything, drop me a message here or an email. can you see my email address from here?

p.s. Dec/Jan is peak season and the hotels in HK get booked up pretty fast.

cheers,
Karen

Thanks for all the input, people! Trying to figure out what neighborhood to stay in. Any ideas? I want to save on the hotel so I can spend more money on FOOD!

I grew up in HK and my parents still live there. Best things in HK are the food, the shopping, and oddly, the outdoor activities. Take at least one day to get out of Central and go walking in the country parks. This site has some great suggestions and this is my favourite hike of all: http://www.walkhongkong.com/dragonsbackhike.html – a gorgeous hike just a taxi ride from the centre of town and you can finish up with amazing Thai food on the beach in Shek O. Also if you can swing it take the ferry (or get your friends to hire a junk for the day) to Lamma or one of the other outlying islands to have seafood. The food in HK is always amazing and I recommend the Chowhound boards for the most up to date reviews. Feel free to email me if you’re looking for more specific reviews eg. a tailor or a guide to a particular part of town if you know where you’re staying.

Will you ever drop by in the Philippines? :D

I always thought that was YOU on the picture! Silly me!
